Speeding is one of the most common motoring offences. Generally speaking, for most people caught speeding the outcome is 3 penalty points and a fine. For some people, however, it can have quite serious consequences. It could result in prosecution for other motoring offences such as driving without due care and attention (careless driving) or dangerous driving . It could also result in a driving ban for example because of an accumulation of 12 penalty points (known as “totting up”).
Speeding cases are heard in the Magistrates’ Court. The maximum sentence is a fine, penalty points and a driving ban.
